Peace Lily Care for Beginners: Light, Water and Blooms

Peace lily is one of the friendliest houseplants for beginners: it tells you when it is thirsty, forgives missed waterings, and flowers indoors without a fuss. Here is how to keep yours green, glossy and blooming.

How much light does a peace lily need?

Peace lilies like bright, indirect light. An east-facing window or a spot a few feet from a south window works well. They tolerate low light, but they bloom less there. Keep them out of harsh afternoon sun, which scorches the leaves.

How often should you water a peace lily?

Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, roughly once a week. Peace lilies droop dramatically when thirsty, which makes them easy to read: a drooping plant usually perks up within hours of watering. Do not let the pot sit in standing water, since wet roots rot quickly.

Why are the leaf tips turning brown?

Brown tips are usually a water quality or humidity issue, not a disease:

  • Tap water with chlorine or fluoride can brown the tips. Use filtered water, or leave tap water out overnight before watering.
  • Low humidity dries the edges. Group plants together or mist occasionally.
  • Over-fertilizing burns the tips. Feed lightly, about once a month in spring and summer, with a balanced houseplant fertilizer at half strength.

How do you get a peace lily to bloom?

The white "flowers" (actually a spathe around a spadix) appear when the plant is mature, slightly root-bound, and gets enough indirect light. If your plant is healthy but never blooms, move it to a brighter spot and feed it lightly in spring. Blooms last a month or more and turn green as they age, which is normal.

Is peace lily safe for pets?

No. Peace lily contains calcium oxalate crystals that irritate the mouth and stomach of cats and dogs if chewed. Keep it out of reach of pets, or choose from our pet-safe houseplants list instead.

FAQ

Why is my peace lily drooping even after watering?

Check the roots. If the soil is soggy and the plant still droops, the roots may be rotting. Let the soil dry out, and repot into fresh, well-draining mix if it does not recover.

Should I cut off yellow leaves?

Yes. Trim yellow or brown leaves at the base with clean scissors. The plant puts its energy into new growth instead.

When should I repot a peace lily?

Repot every one to two years in spring, or when roots circle the pot or grow out of the drainage holes. Go only one pot size up.
